Baptism is an outward sign of a change that’s already happened inside your heart. You can still follow Jesus without being baptized, and if you’ve accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you’ll spend eternity with Him, even if you don’t get baptized. In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul reminds us we’re not saved by any good works—including baptism—but only by grace through faith in Jesus.
Baptism is a symbol. For a married couple, wedding rings are an important symbol. A wedding ring tells everyone that they’re married, but the wedding ring isn’t what made the couple married. In fact, if one of them loses their wedding ring, they’re still married! Baptism is the same way. It’s a symbol that we belong to Jesus and we’ve committed our lives to Him.
